Kaitlyn

It takes the officers a few moments to loop their arms around Kyle and finally pull him away from Elijah. Nevertheless, he continues to spit obscenities and threats, struggling to break free. Two officers have to dig their feet into the ground to drag him away, and I’m honestly surprised that they don’t pull their guns on him.

"Mr. Nova," I say, finally snapping into action. "I need to have a word with you."

I step forward, my hand resting lightly on my gun belt as I prepare to break into a sprint if Kyle decides to run.

Elijah, on the other hand, doesn’t seem to be the least bit concerned, remaining calm and collected. He merely dusts his white linen pants off and meticulously pinches and pulls at the sleeves of his olive green shirt until it’s back in its right place.

“Of course. And you are?” Elijah asks as he holds his hand out to me with a mild but friendly smile. When his blue eyes settle on mine, they’re so steady and unmoving that I find them unnerving.

“Detective Carr,” I say, starting to reach for his hand when I suddenly catch sight of three women approaching Elijah from behind. I pause and eye them, watching them slink their way over and surround him like a shield.

“A pleasure, Detective. Though, I wish we were meeting under different circumstances,” Elijah says as he gives the women, who all look to be in their early twenties and are noticeably thin, a comforting look.

“Did you know Nicole well?”

Elijah gives me a non-committal gesture.

“She was a part of our wellness group, but she’d stopped coming to our meetings not too long ago. We figured she’d given up on us. The path to enlightenment is not a straightforward nor easy journey. Many give up along the way. I merely try to act as a guiding light. Unfortunately, some people lose sight of that light and venture into darkness.”

I have to keep myself from narrowing my eyes. It sounds like a joke, except for the fact that he is utterly serious.

“And you didn’t hear anything from her?” I ask crossing my arms over my chest.

Elijah shakes his head.

“I’m afraid not. I thought she went back to her family,” he says looking over at Kyle, who is seated on the ground next to one of the police cruisers in handcuffs. “She did love them, but to best serve the people you love, you need to be the best version of yourself. She had been willing to make that sacrifice and return home a better person. I hate that she never made it to her husband and their children.”

His voice sounds heavy like he feels true grief, but at the same time, it feels like an act.

“Why are you here, exactly? This is quite far from your stomping
